Mexican wrestler El Hijo del Perro Aguayo died from trauma he suffered in the ring

El Hijo del Perro Aguayo, the son of a Mexican wrestling legend and one of the most popular luchadores in Mexico, died early Saturday morning of injuries he suffered from a blow in the ring during a tag-team match in Tijuana.

An autopsy revealed that Pedro Aguayo Ramirez, his given name, died from trauma to the neck and a cervical fracture, the Baja California state prosecutor’s office announced (via the Associated Press). The office is considering whether charges will be filed.

A flying kick from Oscar Gutierrez, the former WWE star known as Rey Mysterio Jr., dropped Aguayo, who fell unconscious onto the ropes and drooped there for almost two minutes as the match continued, with disturbing video (which can be seen here) capturing the incident. Finally, the referee and other participants realized he was seriously injured. Aguayo, 35, was taken to a nearby hospital and was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m.

Aguayo, the son of Pedro “Perro” Aguayo, had wrestled for 20 years and led a group called “Los Perros de Mal” (the bad dogs). He won titles that included national pairs with his father, a national heavyweight championship and the Consejo Mundial Lucha Libre world trios championship.

“It makes me very sad because he was a professional colleague and I have great affection for his father,” wrestler Hijo del Santo told the AP. “I think the fans in Japan, the U.S. and Mexico, of course, where he was very popular, must be in mourning, especially because of his youth. He had much ahead of him.”

The Clash, the company that reportedly organized the event, had not responded to a request for comment by the AP and The Post. The Tijuana Boxing and Wrestling Commission called Aguayo’s death an unfortunate accident of the sort that can occur in a high-risk sport.

Juan Carlos Pelayo, president of the commission, told the AP that the doctor in charge was not at ringside because another wrestler required treatment. Paramedics and a doctor who was a spectator stepped in.

“El Hijo del Perro Aguayo was among the most decorated AAA stars in recent memory as a three-time Mexican National Tag Team champion as well as a former Mexican National Light Heavyweight champion and Mexican National Atomicos champion,” Mike Chiari of Bleacher Report wrote.”There is no question that El Hijo del Perro Aguayo was among the most popular and successful luchadores in Mexico.”
